Leading Bristol Cycling Campaign – might it be you?

We are looking for two special people to be our Chair and lead our communications. Might this be you, or someone you know? Volunteer activists are at the heart of Bristol Cycling Campaign. We and our supporters have a shared vision that “Cycling is great for Bristol – Let’s make Bristol great for cycling”. However none of our various campaigns would happen without the small group making sure that we are well run and delivering what the activists need. We are looking for two key roles to join the organising group: Chair – to co-ordinate and lead Communications Lead –…

  • We support safe cycling proposals for the Park Row area

We support safe cycling proposals for the Park Row area

The council is currently consulting on changes to the Park Row area, making the “temporary” protected cycle lanes there permanent with a new design. Bristol Cycling Campaign strongly supports the provision of protected cycle lanes on the Park Row area, between Clifton Triangle and Dighton Street. This corridor connects the city centre and beyond to a number of destinations with extremely high potential for active travel, including the University of Bristol and Bristol Royal Infirmary. Historically, the roads on this corridor have presented a very hostile environment for people cycling. Since Summer 2020 there has been some limited cycling provision…

New Transport schemes for Wells Rd & Whiteladies Rd

Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) have a consultation on works on the no 2 bus route, including for cycling. This is a major north-south route taking in many of the most heavily used, and most hostile, cycling routes in the city. We’ve done an executive summary of our response which you can use. There are some good bits, but overall we’re not impressed: We urge Bristol City Council to re-think the proposals, increase the level of ambition and enable people of all ages and abilities to make a safe, convenient and sustainable journey all the way…

  • Motoring offences prosecuted in the local courts

Motoring offences prosecuted in the local courts

Bristol Road Justice brings together campaigners from Cycle Bristol CTC, Bristol Cycling Campaign and RoadPeace to highlight issues around road crime and the appalling level of death, injury and intimidation of cyclists on the city’s roads. One of the national partners we work with is Action Vision Zero (actionvisionzero.org/action-vision-zero-roads-policing-campaign/). They have produced figures for motoring offences, prosecuted in court in 2015-2020, for each police force area, and compared them to the average figures for England and Wales (E&W). Figures for Avon and Somerset (A&S) are available in a PDF on their website. Headlines from the last five years (2015-2020) are:…

  • Podcasts for cycle campaigning

    Podcasts for cycle campaigning

If you’re not already listening, we’d like to warmly recommend the ‘Active Travel Podcast‘ from the Active Travel Academy’s (ATA) Dr Rachel Aldred and journalist Laura Laker. All episodes are worth hearing but we’d like to particularly recommend the ones on media reporting (which is highly relevant to our Road Justice work), on cycling for everyone (another campaign theme), and on low traffic neighbourhoods (our Liveable Neighbourhoods campaign). Media reporting of Active Travel The way cycling and collisions are reported can dramatically affect how the public perceives blame. Sentence focus is usually on pedestrians/cyclists and less so driver fault, or…
